ESL

Centro's largest and longest standing educational service, the English as a Second Language program serves about 400 adult immigrants with more than 12,000 hours of total instruction in a typical year. Utilizing a custom-designed, content-based curriculum, the program teaches English grammar and syntaESL classx through everyday experiences like purchasing groceries or using public transportation. The program offers five separate levels of instruction, including a unique pre-literate level for students not literate in their native languages.

Volunteer Driven
The ESL program uses a staff of skilled volunteer instructors to maximize efficiency without sacrificing quality. Trained by our partner, the Minnesota Literacy Council, these instructors consistently exceed expectations with their performance and their dedication. In a given year, more than 90 such volunteer instructors devote more than 4,000 hours to the program, a teacher:student hours ratio of 1:3! Using industry standards, Centro approximates the value of these individuals' time at nearly $100,000.

Open Door Policy
In line with Centro's mission to serve the community as fully as possible, our ESL program observes no deadlines for registration. Prospective students may register during any regular class period, year-round, and begin learning on the same day. Additionally, no attendance requirements apply. Classes run four days per week, Monday through Thursday, with a morning and evening session each day. Students may come to any combination of sessions that best fits their busy schedules. Results Oriented
For three consecutive years, the program's performance on standardized student testing has exceeded government mandates. The program's successes in performance speak to the quality of its approach in maximizing access and efficiency. While no one type of adult ESL program works for every type of student, we feel strongly that Centro's model holds great potential for meeting increased demand and addressing decreased resources in the future.
